Jemima Browning is the founder of JB Pal, a fitness company in Wetherby set up to make sure that all people with additional needs are afforded the same opportunities to unlock their potential.
Jemima says, “ I have always loved sport, exercise and fitness and recognise the huge drive it can have to enhance lives and maximise potential. I am an ex-swimmer, professional Disability Coach and specialised Personal Trainer. I set up JB PAL to help people with additional needs experience equal opportunities and reach their fullest potential. We do this through fitness education, personal fitness and being part of a swimming team.
Being a sibling and a carer, I have seen first-hand the devastating effects of being excluded and left behind can have on people with additional needs. This happens all too often and JB Pal is here to change that.
My brother has Down syndrome and Autism. It was gut wrenching to watch him be excluded and feel like he wasn’t good enough. Sport was something he always enjoyed, and he saw everyone else doing. He became withdrawn and unhappy in life. He sat and watched people around him achieve the things he had the desire to do.
When I started an inclusive swimming group the change in him was incredible to watch. Every aspect of his life improved. He was part of a group where he was valued for being himself. He was able to achieve within his sport and work towards new goals too.
After starting gym programs with JB Pal he grew in confidence even more. He was able to set his own targets and work to meet them. He was in a space where his voice was listened to, he had the freedom to choose and he was able to show the world what he can do. The difference has been incredible and I have been privileged enough to see this in the many people with disabilities with whom I work.
Everyone deserves a space where they are listened to, their abilities are recognised, and they can achieve their potential. JB Pal offers this and more with the added benefit of living a healthier lifestyle.
I am determined to help as many people with disabilities as possible. I offer a safe space where people can be themselves, are always listened to, are never judged and are free to express their desires.”
